Discussing a Crisis With Your Child: East Windsor School District Responds to Shooting
The following message appears on the East Windsor Regional School District website
Whether you are a parent, educator, student, or simply a citizen, we were all shocked and saddened by the horrific attack that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut.
Mass attacks, especially against children, are beyond comprehension.
I want to assure all of our families that the safety of our students and staff is the top priority in our schools.
Although I cannot discuss our security procedures in detail, I can write that we have a comprehensive plan for admitting and monitoring visitors to the building.
Also, each month, your children rehearse what to do during an emergency and we have recently updated our Crisis Management Manuals and procedures.
We also maintain a longstanding and positive relationship with both the East Windsor and Hightstown police departments.
During times of crisis for children, the parents’ role is even more important.
Although we have counselors available at all of our schools to assist you in communicating these events to your children, we know that you are the best provider for this information.
As a parent, I realize how difficult these conversations can be.
Below are four websites that offer advice for communicating these events with your children.
I am not endorsing the sites, they were just four of the better sites I found or were suggested to me by a colleague.
We will remain vigilant in maintaining the safety of our schools.
If you feel your child is having more difficulty than most in dealing with this crisis, please notify your school’s counselor.
