Mayor Janice S. Mironov announced that the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Garden State Preservation Trust have approved a grant in the amount of $325,000 to East Windsor Township, for the acquisition of open space under the Green Acres Program. The Township of East Windsor received notification of the new grant in a September 18, 2012 letter from the Governor.
Mayor Mironov stated, “we are grateful to the State for this $325,000 State Green Acres grant, which will help fund desired Township projects. These funds are very important in enabling East Windsor Township to continue our ambitious program to acquire and preserve open space in East Windsor. Preservation of open space and farmland remains a top priority of this Township administration, and a key component of maintaining recreational opportunities and a healthy balance of open land for the community.”
According to Mayor Mironov, “the $325,000 in grant funds will be used by the Township to acquire additional open space sites listed in the Township state approved Open Space and Recreation Plan.” There are several parcels currently being considered for public acquisition on Old York Road, Conover Road, Etra Road, and Cedarville Road. Recent East Windsor acquisitions include 40 acres on Etra Road, a 30 acre property on Disbrow Hill Road, as well as 7.55 acres on Airport Road and a pending 38 acre donation on Wyckoffs Mill Road.
With this most recent grant, the total amount of Green Acres funds approved through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to date for the Township and East Windsor Green Space, Inc. is over $6,675,000, along with approximately $3 million in Mercer County open space funds. This new grant is contingent upon the passage of the legislative appropriation.
