Update: Gov. Chris Christie signed an executive order Wednesday morning rescheduling Halloween to Nov. 5. Hightstown and East Windsor have likewise rescheduled Halloween for Monday.

There's nothing scarier than trick-or-treating in unsafe conditions.

That's what officials are telling those princesses and superheroes who hoped to embark on their quest for candy Wednesday.

"I can’t imagine it’s going to be safe for kids to go around for Halloween tomorrow night in most parts of state," said Gov. Chris Christie during a media briefing Tuesday. 

If conditions were not safe on Wednesday for trick-or-treating, he said via his Twitter account Monday he would sign an Executive Order rescheduling Halloween. Christie signed the executive order Wednesday morning postponing Halloween to Nov. 5.

"We want kids to have Halloween, but I want kids to be safe and alive," Christie said Tuesday.

"I’ve taken this action to minimize additional risks to lives and the public safety as we begin the process of rebuilding and recovering from Hurricane Sandy,” Christie said Wednesday.

“In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work," he continued. "As Governor, it is my responsibility to use all available resources of the state government to protect against the emergency created by Hurricane Sandy – postponing Halloween celebrations by five days is a commonsense and necessary step to accomplish that.

Hightstown Borough Administrator Michael Theokas announced Tuesday, due to the widespread power outage and hazardous conditions in Hightstown, Halloween is postponed and residents should stay off the roads. The borough has rescheduled Halloween for Nov. 5.

Additionally, all trick-or-treating in Cranbury is rescheduled to Friday, Nov. 2. The township has provided a printable sign for residents to post on their doors to alert trick-or-treaters.

In East Windsor, residents are reminded to minimize travel on area roads as much as possible. Downed trees, poles, and power lines remain on many roadways, making roads impassable and unsafe. The township has rescheduled Halloween to Nov. 5.
