Hightstown Intersection Changes from 2-way to 4-way Stop

What do you think of the change?

The intersection of South Main Street and Ward Street changed from a two-way stop to a four-way stop Thursday after a studied showed high truck and pedestrian volume at the intersection.

The change comes after an engineer from Mercer County studied traffic at the intersection and recommended the four-way stop, according to a resolution passed by the Borough Council in June of last year.  The traffic came from both trucks and pedestrians walking to and from the Peddie School, the resolution said.

Patch wants to know what you think of the change. Do you think having a four-way stop will make the intersection safer? Or do you think the stop is more of an inconvenience to motorists? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Good idea. Part of the problem at yhat intersection is the limited visibility due to the cars parked on South Main Street. By having the traffic on S. Main stop, it should make turning off of Ward easier and safer.

I walk all over the Borough with my dog on a regular basis... I doubt this will help. The real issue is drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The drivers may stop at the sign, but then they continue without regard to people waiting in the crosswalk.

A very logical decision since vehicles have to stop again in front of the Baptist church or making left or right turns on E or W Ward St. It is a dangerous intersection that needs to be controlled. If it does not improve safety and traffic flow we can revert to the previous hope and pray intersection.

I think the new signs are a necessary traffic control in an area with high-volume traffic and numerous pedestrians. As a community member, though, I was very disappointed at the tactics of the Hightstown Police Department yesterday at this intersection. Instead of providing a visible presence to help motorists identify and understand the new traffic pattern, the police seemed more intent on ticketing violators. Sadly, the warning signs (only posted for two days) were removed from Main Street at the same time the signs were unveiled and within hours, a police cruiser were hidden behind the law office in an effort to catch and ticket violators (who had no warning of the change prior to the intersection). Shouldn’t our law enforcement be more proactive in educating and monitoring the safety of the situation during the first day or two?

One would think so, actually HPD lives for this sort of situation. The public should also brush up on what to do when coming to a 4-way stop. Who goes 1st????

Reguardless of when they put the sign there, IT'S THERE and as every good driver knows you don't drive from memory!!! You should always be aware of you're surroundings.

One issue with pedestrians in the Borough is that they often wait on the sidewalk for a break in the traffic, or for motorists to stop. However, a motorist stopping for a pedestrian waiting on the sidewalk is liable if they are hit from behind. As a pedestrian, you may step into the crosswalk and wait then for vehicles to stop before proceeding to cross. One step from the curb is enough to alert motorists that you are exercising your right of way and wish to cross.
This doesn't mean that motorists will stop immediately, which is dangerous, but unless as a pedestrian you place yourself in the cross walk, then you have no right of way. One step is all it takes for motorists, in a reasonable manner, to recognize your wish to cross and if safely possible, slow and stop, or if not possible, continue.

It is amazing, however, how many motorists will not stop even if you and your stroller are in the crosswalk. I cross over Route 33 by Fernando's 3x a week to walk my son to preschool. We can stand in the crosswalk (or even the middle of the crosswalk) yet motorists will not yield.

How did they decide to put a sign at this intersection? The other end of Ward, at Mercer, needs a stop sign or light..

It is much easier to cross the street now that it is a 4 way stop. Even though the law states that pedestrians have the right of way, cars would not stop even when my children and I were in the middle of the cross walk. Nearly two years ago my 2 year old, who was in a stroller, my 5 year old, and I were crossing and were hit by a motorist. My daughter took the brunt of it....luckily she escaped with only scrapes and bruises, but has been damaged mentally by the accident. My son's stroller was hit and ended up in the middle of the road on its side. He, also, escaped with only a few scrapes and was too young to really remember it. If motorists have a problem with this change then they should find a new route. I live at that corner. I stand there every day waiting for my daughter's bus. Motorists drive too fast through the intersection and barely slow down to let pedestrians cross. I have witnessed several accidents at this intersection, including a teenager on a bike who was hit by a car. This is a GREAT thing and I applaud the town for finally doing something about it! By the way, there is now a flashing alert sign letting motorists know that there is new stop ahead.

This 4-way stop sign was brought to us back in late summer and passed as a Resolution by our Borough Council via Mercer County DOT. It has always been quite the problemed intersection. I myself helped a young girl with another passerby over the summer... because the process of who goes was uncertain. Thankfully everyone was ok and just skaken up. I have for the past few days seen the HPD monitoring the traffic. Just a word of caution. PEOPLE ARE STILL LEARNING THE NEW "LAY OF THE LAND"....be careful. on the positive note, now that the signs are there the pedestrian traffic has an easier time crossing. THANKS TO EVERYONE....

Agreed! Even while I am walking IN THE CROSSWALK, many drivers won't stop or slow down! People lack common courtesy, are in a hurry, and are distracted by phone calls, texts, and GPS systems and don't pay attention. It's really scary. And on South Main, a majority of drivers go WAY over 25 mph, which makes crossing even more dangerous. I would love to see HPD STRICTLY ENFORCE the 25 mph limit throughout Hightstown to keep us all safer. Stop signs help, but speeding and distractions are bigger issues.

This new 4-way stop is a really great idea. Why didn't some of us think about it years ago? It should definitely have a traffic-calming effect on South Main street, as drivers blocks away begin to react to the brake lights up ahead. I'll bet also that more than a few truck drivers will begin to find other ways through and around town as well.
