'Limited' State of Emergency Declared in Mercer County

As Hurricane Sandy heads toward New Jersey, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes signed an order declaring a "limited state of emergency" in the county. That order does not restrict travel but allows the county to begin implementing its emergency plan.

In anticipation of the severe weather conditions expected in Central New Jersey as a result of Hurricane Sandy, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes this morning (Oct. 27) signed an executive order declaring a “limited state of emergency” in the county.

While that order does not limit travel in the area, it allows the Mercer County Office of Emergency Management to begin implementing its emergency plan.

“Despite this storm’s perceived weakening, it is still a powerful storm that can cause significant damage. I urge everyone to take this storm seriously and be as prepared as possible,” Hughes said.

He reminded residents that once the storm hits, residents should limit travel whenever possible. “You can be of most help to our emergency teams and road crews if you prepare now and travel only if absolutely necessary.”

Hughes again urged residents to “shelter in place” – stay in their home sunless threatened by an emergency situation. The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey is responsible for regional shelters and people with such need should call (609) 951-8550 or go to www.njredcross.org.
