Hightstown Funeral Director Accused of Stealing $500K from Relative, 96
Joseph Barlow received power of attorney over victim, according to prosecutor's office.
A Hightstown funeral director is accused of stealing $513,766 from an elderly relative, according to the Hightstown Borough Police Department.
Cranbury resident Joseph Barlow, 68, received power of attorney over the 96-year-old woman, a distant relative, in 2010 and stole from her over a two-year period, Mercer County Prosecutor's Office spokesperson Casey DeBlasio said in an email to East Windsor Patch.
The prosecutor's office said he wrote four checks to himself, three for $35,000 and one for $55,000, and had a life insurance policy for more than $300,000 closed in September 2011. The life insurance money was sent to his business, DeBlasio said.
Barlow is a funeral director with Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home, Hightstown police confirmed.
Barlow was charged with theft and was released after posting $25,000 in bail.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office and the Hightstown Borough Police Department jointly investigated the incident.
