Resident's Call Credited with Preventing Hightstown Funeral Home Blaze
There were no injuries.
A small mulch fire below the porch of Barlow and Zimmer Funeral Home Wednesday was put out quickly thanks to a nearby resident's actions, police said.
Hightstown police said in a news release “the quick thinking and actions of a Hightstown Borough resident thwarted a structure fire that may have resulted in severe damage.”
Neighbor Holly Moraitis saw smoke at the funeral home around 12:10 p.m. and called 9-1-1, police said. When police arrived, they used a fire extinguisher to knock down the flames on the wood lattice on the porch, and the Hightstown Engine Company put the fire fully out.
There were no injuries and police said the fire was contained.

What's with all these mulch fires lately? How can they be prevented?

Mulch fires are usually caused by a carelessly discarded match or cigarette. But I wonder if the recent dry spell might have created an opportunity for spontaneous combustion.
