Tell Patch: What Should Move into the Vacant Hightstown Storefront?
Think outside of the box - What would be the perfect retail establishment for this location?
Molto Bene relocated to Cranbury after five to six feet of water poured into the downtown Hightstown shop during Hurricane Irene last August.
Owners didn’t have flood insurance and decided it was the best option for them to make the move to neighboring Cranbury after the Small Business Administration gave them a loan to help them get back on their feet.
Since the storm, a new coffee shop has opened in the shop adjacent to the old Molto Bene location, and Patch wants to know what you would like to see in the vacant shop.
If you could put anything in the downtown location, what would you like to see? A restaurant? A pottery shop? The new location for Borough Hall? Or maybe a dentist or a dance studio?
Tell Patch in the comments below what establishment you think should come to this location.

another idea would be a bicycle rental...they could be kept on racks so if there is a flood they could be up and out of the water....just a thought....

Hightstown/East Windsor REALLY needs a café that serves light food, coffee/tea, desserts. Sort of like what Molto Bene was but more warm and affordable. We do not have any Panera's or Starbucks or any place like that to just go alone with a book or laptop or with a friend to chat. I always have to drive to Hamilton, Plainsboro or Princeton for Panera or a coffee shop. Would be so nice to have one in my town :)

I would like to see a cafe, but not a big chain like Starbucks or Panera. Something that's not as meat heavy as the grill on the corner. I also would appreciate a Greek restaurant.

Until there is more parking than that small lot across the street, not much is going to do well. Unfortunately too many businesses have tried.

Whatever goes in there I hope they put a sign up so that we know what it is, unlike the mystery business across from borough hall.
terribly tired of this

Amen to that, Leslie. What is that green curtained place? Health clinic? Rental agency?

I went in there a year or two ago, asked them what it was and they told me it was an Herbalife distributor. This despite the fact that there were no products anywhere, just a big waiting area.

Borough Hall - Photos in the Trenton Times show how they are working out of one small room. This would give them about all the space they need to not make decisions! Honestly who would rent the space knowing the flood history of the area of town. Just saying....

How about a taxi office, free services, check cashing, or a staffing agency? They seem to be very succesful businesses in the downtown.

Right, any other business would have problems with the lack of parking but the taxis can just park on the sidewalk like they do at shoprite.

It should be an insurance company. And they can sell flood insurance to the rest of the businesses nearby

It would be nice if whatever goes there is willing to be a part of the community and do business with EVERY resident and not just the Spanish community. We have so many stores and taxis that self segregate then complain of being picked on when told to comply with the rules.

Your idea is sound but doesn't go far enough. We need to see American food, served by American workers to American patrons. Enough with the Chinese food and the Italian food [good riddance to MOLTO BENE, eh?]. And as long as we're heading down that highway, I'd like to see ALL the businesses along Main Street run by and for Americans. I know for a FACT that there are foreigners running shoe repair and dry cleaning establishments and God alone knows who's running the banks. If we're going to clean this borough up and make it safe for our women and children again [I mean for crying out loud, we've had a MURDER in the last 10 years...what do they think...this is Trenton?], if we're going to clean things up, we need to be ruthless. I'd rather see downtown deserted and quiet then overrun with riff-raff and hoi polloi. Admittedly, we'd lose a lot of tax revenues that would have to be made up in property taxes, but increased property taxes are a small price to pay for purity and parity, right? I dunno, maybe we can get one of the gangs to open a bicycle repair shop....as long as they're American bikes.

A café would be nice... and yes Dave... one that caters to everyone preferably! (Across from Borough Hall is "Total Welfare". They have since covered the "Welfare" part that was posted in English... probably a good thing considering the connotation. Not sure exactly what they do, but the name alone makes me sick to my stomach. No kidding, total welfare... must be nice to not pay taxes, get a free education, and have everybody turn their heads on the real issues in the Borough.)

I absolutely agree. The sniveling cowards we keep voting in don't seem interested in helping us non-welfare folks. And you notice that it doesn't matter whether they're Democrat or Republican...both parties snivel and waffle. It's time to take Hightstown back. We need to remember what our fore-fathers did both in 1776 and 1861. They were proud men, American men, with American weapons fighting for American ideals. We're too timid to fight anybody. We leave it to the god-accursed Borough council to do something and then complain when they don't get it right. We need to do what our fathers did in the '60s [the 1960s] when brave young American men and women with long hair proudly flying just like George Washington's took over the campuses and town halls of America and made their voices heard.

We do not have any hot dog wagons in this area at all. A very simple grill that serves only hot dogs/hamburgers/fries/etc. I think a lot of families would go there to relax and get some comfort food. There is plenty of parking across the street.

There are many Latino businesses in Hightstown because any business has cater to the local cliental which is this case is Latino. As far as cabs are concerned if anyone other then a Latino wants to start a business in Hightstown they can. Apparently none want to.

I wonder which Latino businesses in Hightstown or residents donated flower baskets this year.
Matthew
3:08 pm on Sunday, July 15, 2012
Potential's right. We don't know which latinos contributed, but we sure as hell can just assume that they didn't. I mean, hell, I know that none of my neighbors did and they're all Caucasians. And if the Caucasians can't get behind Hightstown, there's no reason why others should. But we need to take this to the next level. We need to find out who DIDN'T contribute and picket their store(s)....hit 'em where they hurt...in the pocketbook. We need to get pickets out there 24/7, rain or shine, sun wind or snow. I'd be the first to volunteer but I'm kinda busy writing letters to the editor [hey, I know that's a dirty and dangerous job, but that's just the kind of heroic American I am....no sacrifice's too great....god, I'm proud to be me]. And I know that although I can't picket, I'm sure there are many voices in Hightstown who would welcome the chance to strike a blow for freedom.

I like John's idea. A cafe that caters to the arts. A place that sells coffee and light fare. People could go there with there laptops. Then at night there could be writers meetings, open mike comedy nights, showcases for local bands/singers, poetry readings, informal performances of new plays, etc. Sounds like a place I'd like to hang out.

Unfortunately, we lost the best tenant for that space. Having visited them several times in their new location, they seem to be a great fit in their new community and I wish them the best. Perhaps it's time we looked at an upgrade to our own downtown in order to attract/retain similar type uses. We can embrace our diversity while at the same time polish our image. Plans don't need to be perfect, either, as we all tend to bicker over everything. Perhaps a public/private partnership is the way to go. What has come of the GHEWIP report since it was presented? Does Borough Council need to act, or is it the Planning Board? Or worse yet, do we not know how to act on the recommendations in the report? We've got two drive thru banks in the heart of our downtown. Should we be catering to vehicles or is there perhaps a better use for these key properties in town? Perhaps it's time to think outside the box and get the banks out onto the highway and redevelop these properties. A bigger vision is needed and the rest will follow.

I'm extremely excited to see that International Roasting Post is moving in! Let's hope this is just the first step in the process of repositioning our downtown. I encourage everyone to support this expanding business.

Why retail? Some of you might have noticed we have lost a lot of jobs in Hightstown. If you get a job in a retail store do you get paid enough to afford to live in Hightstown, or do you need to live some place else and commute here?
At one point in time I worked for a small MANUFACTURING company in Wrightstown. When the Air Force Base downsized the local strip mall was devastated. So the zoning board allowed the owner to rent to us. We built high tech products, in a strip mall! After a couple of years the owner was out looking for more companies like us. Why? Because we generated no noise, no traffic, no loitering outside, didn't need lots of parking etc. We paid a whole lot more than minimum wage too!

How about a nation chain franchise for tax preparation?
