Tell Patch: What Should Move into the Vacant SuperFresh Location?

Think outside of the box - What would be the perfect retail establishment for this location?

Since SuperFresh shut its doors last April, the location has remained vacant in an East Windsor shopping center that has lost several businesses.

Patch wants to know what type of business you would like to see at this location. Another grocery store? A gym? A bowling alley?

Tell Patch in the comments below what establishment you think should come to this location.

Agree on some of the grocery store suggestions, but also a Giant grocerty store would be great. They are in PA and are wonderful! Definitely a new grocery store. Shopping at Shop Rite makes me want to scream!

Instead of what to do with Superfresh, what should be done with Guinardis that has been empty much longer and all the other empty stores?

Good point: A Wegmans where Guinardis used to be (Target's shopping center) and a Trader Joes or Whole Foods where SuperFresh was.

We need anther food store there also. we at least could shop at the one that is best for us.Maybe just for seniors with help for them. I could go to the store for myself if I had someone to bring a shopping cart to me to lean on. It is better then the walker that I have to use to go to the store. Help your older people help themselves.

A low cost gym like a Planet Fitness. All the local gyms are too expensive, so a $10/month gym would clean up.

Who can afford to pay the rent there? Thats the real problem...Maybe the town should sit down with the strip malls owners and cut them a deal so they can attract some business there. Anything is better than nothing.......I agree that Trader Joes with a liquor license would thrive there and force shoprite to compete. You can do it Janice......

I vote for a grocery store. I hate shopping at Shop Rite. The parking sucks, and the store is not shopper friendly. The aisles are always crowded. The only Shop Rite in the area that is worth going too is the one located at Hamilton Market Square.

I use coupons...i'm not a snob, but a store with the name Bottom Dollar doesn't look good for the township. Trader Joe's is a great idea and they have reasonable prices. You may not buy all of your food there but you could go to ShopRite or BJs once a month and fill in with Trader Joes. And we don't need a store that is 10 minutes down the road in Hamilton... really... you can't drive 10 minutes to get to a store.

It's not like it's going to bring down the image of the town, considering we have a Sell your gold store, at least 3 dollar stores, and many empty storefronts...

Right - a brand new Bottom Dollar Food store would look a lot better than the empty stores. Let's all be realistic - Trader Joe's and Wegmans aren't coming here. If they wanted to, they would've already made their intentions clear. Acme already closed in West Windsor. I'm all for another supermarket, but it doesn't look like they are knocking down the doors to come here. If Bottom Dollar is willing to open a brand new store and hire people, then I'm all for it.

We don't have to settle for less, the BOTTOM. States all over the USA offer tax incentives to draw businesses to their state that sometimes even turn into bidding wars between states because they see value in prospect. If we want to stand up for quality rather an a "something is better than nothing" attitude then we E.W. needs to do a better job of letting it be known to these businesses.

Perhaps offering a multi-year (three? five?) tax incentive program or similar offer that makes smart business sense could be the strong enticement to win them over. No need to reinvent the wheel here, what has proven a very successful strategy for states and even countries (Dubai) could help attract the business we want rather than scraping the BOTTOM of the barrel. As we all continue to know more about the importance of quality food choices, we realize that cheaper isn't better; "would you like some pink slime (aka: pet food additive) with that burger?"

Reviews on the Bottom Dollar chain are pretty dismal as well:

well written, casper! i checked out the website earlier this week and followed the link you posted. lets just say bottom dollar- the name and quality of food speaks for itself. i'm baffled that consumers would rather save a few dollars then care about the quality of food they are eating or feeding their families.

we need to set our limits higher rather then settling for poor quality businesses. as much as we pay in property taxes (and as educated consumers), we deserve better choices.

I don't believe it's going to be mandatory to shop there. McDonalds and a lot of other places sell poor quality and unhealthy food, we shouldn't allow them in town either? If so many people want another store start a co-op. I don't think this store is going to destroy the image of our town any more than the 100 cabs we have running all over the place. Lets focus on all the illegal boarding houses that are causing more image and tax problems than a store ever will

No one is advocating barring a business; rather that the community entice the businesses that serve it best.

Dave Bell

7:47 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012

I'm assuming they did research as I'm sure Whole Foods and Trader Joes did as well, and they came to believe they could service the community. I'm not saying I would shop there but I'm just glad we are having one less empty store. I don't feed my child a steady diet of McDonalds just because it's here. Again lets look at real problems that are causing bad image and tax problems.

i am proposing that a quality business move into the old superfresh location (per the topic of the article) not poor quality businesses, such as cab companies or boarding houses, as you cited.

You are simply assuming they did their research and that doesn't cut it; we all know what happens when you assume. Let's keep the thread on topic; your suggestion to focus instead on town image and tax problems should be addressed in a different thread. There's plenty of room on this site for both conversations and encouraged.

There seems to be A LOT of assuming going on here. And town image has been a running theme, so just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I have to take it to a different thread. But thanks for your concern that my comments don't fit with the image of the thread

Walmart and Target have both stepped into the breach: both offer a grocery selection and even fresh fruits and vegetables. I am a senior with physical limitations and I appreciate the cart provided at Walmart. I also shop the "little stores" inasmuch as "little" means less pain. I also have learned to shop and compare online; and shop for fresh fruits and vegetables at Mendies organically-grown food stand. There are ways to resolve problems. I am five miles from any grocery store. I can still drive, but bless those cabs. It is good to know we can rely on them on days when either or both the car or my body are not up to it.

The bottom line is that East Windsor makes it very difficult to do business (or much else). Business will grow when the current mayor moves on and commerce can be about commerce and not one person's insatiable ego.

What is the connection between the mayor's policies and desirable businesses not coming to East Windsor? I have heard it said in the comment section here that it has to do with the planning board making unreasonable demands. Is that the case?

Jim Rura

11:35 am on Thursday, January 31, 2013

An antique mall and indoor market would turn East Windsor into a tourist destination. Also, all residents would be able to empty out their excess stuff in either their own booth or consignment area. Additionally, antique malls serve as business incubators since you can get started in a 10x10 "business" for minimal monthly cost. Imagine the impact of 100 local residents starting their own business!
