TELL US: What Should Go in the Old Super Fresh Location?
Give us your recommendations for what new store should move in to the old supermarket location.
The Super Fresh Super Store left East Windsor in April 2011 and the empty storefront within the Windsor-Hights Shopping Center still haunts the Township.
The Super Fresh, owned by A&P, was forced to close after the company filed chapter 11 documents with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court’s Southern District of New York. The store was one of 32 A&P stores that were chosen to close because they were “underperforming”, the court papers said.
Last year, East Windsor Patch asked you what you would like to see move into this location, but has your opinion changed? Some previous recommendations included another grocery store, sporting goods store, or gym. Do you agree? Have the needs in East Windsor changed in a year?
TELL US: What type of retail establishment would you like to take see in this location? Tell us in the comments below!

Should be a competitive and different supermarket. Shoprite is always too crowded and is the only game in town. We need another choice. How about Risoldi's?

There are people like me who never ever go to Shoprite because it is too big and too crowded. I actually order almost everything online these days; they bring it to the door, most without shipping charges, and I can easily compare prices and get good buys. And yes, there are those who will deliver frozen and refrigerator foods.

I agree that a Trader Joe's would be wonderful. I live in West Windsor but work in East Windsor and the Trader Joe's in West Windsor is always full of people. The food is great and the prices are too.
If not a Trader Joe's than another supermarket like a Wegmans, Giant or Pathmark. Shop Rite needs some competition.

How about a flea market where merchants rent space and sell discounted goods or crafts? It could become a destination-type place with benefits to local eating establishments.

A flea market? Another dollar store? Yikes...we might as well put in a solid wast facility. Nothing brings down home values like flea markets and too many dollar stores. Trader Joes or Wegmans would be great. Doubt they'd invest in EW though.

I agree with Trader Joe's but it probably won't happen since there's one 15 mins. away & they tend to have their stores in the affluent market area. I would like to see an International food market that sells food from Europe, Asia, Latin America, etc. There's one in Atlanta that's fabulous. The produce, cheese, meat depts. are vast and it would be great to have choices.

I'm not sure what should go in there. I do know another super market is not the answer. We've had a Genuardi's in the shopping center near Target that underperformed and closed. Then we had a Super Fresh in the shopping center near Staples that under performed and closed. Now we have Walmart selling a lot of the same food items that Shop Rite sells. And we have the Route 130 Farmers Market for produce. Now in order for us to get the quality and low prices we seek, we need to shop at all 3 locations, but another supermarket will not change that. I think the only way another supermarket would succeed in East Windsor and help alleviate the crowds in Shop Rite would be to build one in the Twin Rivers section of East Windsor. And if they ever do go through with the project on Wykoff Mills Road to build more houses, it will get worse before it gets better.

Many good suggestions here on this topic and It's kind of sad seeing that vacant spot,as well as several other vacant small storefronts in that strip mall. Superfresh closed with about 31 other A&P owned stores due to lack of performance. I'm told, however that the "Over Billie's" property on 33 East near Twin Rivers has been sold to Shoprite for their new store. I know that the owners of the Staples strip mall has been raising everyone's lease to cost-prohibitive-levels which, I hear, is why Tiger Deli, the paint store and others have just left. I can't imagine how much the owners want for a new lease on the former Superfresh area. Within the last 2 years, a Bottom Dollar Store was trying to buy land from the owner of Shady Rest (sort of)Retirement Community in that community. Why wouldn't they have just gone into the Superfresh area? Must cost too much for a long-term lease. Why haven't any other retail or wholesale stores moved in there? As always, there's probably more to it than meets the (public) eye. Banks seem to have no problem affording the leases there! LOL

Over Billy's Inn is in Monroe, but that would definitely work. The reason why the owners of the strip mall raise everyone's rent is to cover for the stores in that strip mall which have left. It's the same thing with our property taxes. We have numerous empty commercial businesses and residential homes throughout East Windsor. And those of us who remain, must pick up for those empty locations and lack of payments. That's part of the reason why our taxes are so high. And when WaWa looks to build a super WaWa with a gas station and Walmart looks to expand into a super Walmart, and both are rejected by our township, that affects each and everyone of us. Because two large stores like those would be taxed heavily, which would help alleviate our taxes.

Vincent - Tiger's Deli closed because both owners were in their late 70's/ early 80's and they wanted to retire and their kids didn't want to take over. The paint store is still open by the way. The plaza has been hit with some bad luck - Blockbuster closed as are 1000's of others around the country and Super Fresh closed as part of other closings. There are some good things happending though - Sprint opened up though and PNC remodeled their location. For some reason, EW can't support more than 1 supermarket. At one point, we had three...

That is not why Tiger's Deli closed. First of all Mrs Tiger had passed away. R.I.P! Second of all, Claudia had no issues continuing with the business. After all, it was all she knew. The problem was their business dropped off significantly after Super Fresh closed. It was no longer profitable. Their business went down and their rent kept going up. Super Fresh was the anchor that brought all of the businesses there a lot of foot traffice. And you can go to that Sprint store anytime of the day and count the amount of customers in there on one hand and still have plenty of fingers left for the game, Once, Twice, Three: Shoot. And unless another anchor store occupies that location, we'll be seeing other stores closing down soon. The paint store had to lay off the helpers that once worked there. They are currently struggling. Sabrina's basically gives away pies for cost on Sunday's just to get business. And Sprint is always empty. And that is just one side of the L shaped strip mall. The other side has several empty locations that nobody seems to be interested in renting. That entire location is in trouble.

Target also sells groceries so along with Wal Mart there is competition for Shop Rite and no need for another food market. How about using the former Super Fresh, or former Genardi's for a Town Center where groups of all ages could go and have classes, games, other activities that would involve the entire community. A nominal member fee could be charged to cover costs, pay for Police presence, etc. Perhaps there is a Grant of some type that could be applied for - through the State or even Federal government. If properly set up, properly monitored, it would allow for a full time place for all sorts of things to go on - for all age groups. I know there is a senior center in town (near the Municipal Center I believe) but a larger facility would provide greater options and be open for all age groups.

Small Whole Foods or Trader Joe's for SuperFresh space. Also, maybe Bristol Farms. But what about the much larger ex-Genuardi's space that has been vacant for 10 years?
EW is 9 miles from route 1 and 9 miles from Hamilton MarketPlace. Seems no large establishment is willing to take a chance on EW. Perhaps the right incentive package might help.

Jamesway! I love it. Thanks for the chuckle! A healthy food option like Whole Foods or Trader Joes would certainly be nice, but somehow I don't think it would happen. I have often looked at the Genuardi's space and thought it would make an awesome indoor skate park, youth center with various options, etc. I also figured that would not likely happen given the insurance and low return on income draw given the likely high rent it commands. Having facilities for all ages would be nice though. I also think with the opening of iPlay America in Freehold that there is not enough market share to warrant another such entertainment palace this close. I could be wrong. I don't know how successful iPlay is in making money. We went twice but found the costs to be a bit steep for more regular business. Whatever moves in will have to be sustainable in its draw in order to be successful longterm.

How about what to do with the whole shopping complex? Most of it is empty and it seems like the owners need to do a complete renovation. Similar to what is being done in Princeton Jct. with the old acme. Upscale won't work here and that market is saturated. Possibly break it down into smaller stores or a large scale Amish market like the one in Kingston,

There are two major problems with this shopping center right now. First, the market has shifted from this intersection to the Shoprite Center where there are virtually no vacancies but the same or higher rents. Secondly, the banks today are making it almost impossible to get financing to open new small businesses that would fill this center and bring more customers to the center. Even when a businessman can get financing they are going to the most dynamic center in the market and it isn't Windsor Hights Shopping Center any more. The center owners are going to have to make some incentivized deals with name brand tenants, revitalize the center and then bring in the smaller tenants to fill the stores. Unfortunately, the old owners of the center allowed the center to go into a death spiral by neglecting vacancies, not working with existing tenants to renew leases at more reasonable terms in light of the lack of new business start-ups and they did not maintain the center to today's standards. Until the center's ownership comes up with a viable plan to draw more customers and tenants, whatever goes into that space faces an uphill battle.
