Trenton, N.J. – The staff and students of Mercer County Community College’s Trenton Campus invite community members to an annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on Monday, January 20, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The celebration will be held in Kerney Hall at the Trenton Campus at 102 North Broad Street.

This year’s theme is “Civil Rights for All: Combating Human Trafficking.”  The event will feature a discussion of this modern-day international human rights crisis. Participants include Lowell Hochhalter, of F.R.E.E. (Find, Rescue, Embrace and Empower) International, a group dedicated to working with victims of human trafficking and forced prostitution. F.R.E.E. has worked with students across the United States, communicating a message of hope and encouragement.  Tekla Roberts, a survivor of human trafficking, will also speak, along with New Jersey Assistant Attorney General Tracy Thompson.

Student participants from MCCC’s Youth College, an enrichment program for Trenton area teens, will commemorate the life and work of Dr. King in original poems and essays.

The event is free and open to the public.  It is hosted by MCCC’s African American Student Organization (AASO), the Trenton Campus Student Activities Board, Youth College (including Upward Bound, SMILE/GEARUP, Educational Talent Search, Urban Academic Academy) and the Trenton Campus Provost’s Office.
