'Girls' Weekend Out

College friends look to reunite after marriages, children.

Some 20-plus years after our college graduations, me and a few Bryn Mawr College friends of mine are looking to reconnect and spend a “girls” weekend out without spouses or significant others, or kids. (I put “girls” in quotes, because since we’ve been out of college for at least two decades, we are certainly more than just school-aged girls.)

We’ve kept in touch over the years, but since we are spread out between Boston, Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., the times we have actually all been in the same place since leaving Bryn Mawr have been few and far between. We have taken different paths in life: We are doctors, researchers and writers/editors and are in the television and banking fields. Some of us are married with kids, while others of us are single. Since we are all about to hit a big round birthday figure (I won’t elaborate here), we thought it would be fun to have a mini reunion.

I have to admit that I have never been away for a weekend without my spouse and kids since my children were born, so being away from them will be tough for me. But, as my husband is an excellent father and caregiver, I know that my kids will be in good hands.

I know my daughters will do better than I expect  them to while I am away— I went away for a two-night business trip to Washington, D.C., when my children were 2, and they were very happy those two nights spending time with just their dad and grandmother.

My friends and I are looking to perhaps stay somewhere on the New Jersey shore, since when two of my friends graduated, we all spent a week at Wildwood together to celebrate, and it would be good to revive that memory.

I’ve done a little researching so far and found a spa on the shore near Red Bank, NJ, that looked nice, but at about $1,000 for a two-night spa package, I think it’d be good to find something that won’t be as costly. I thought that with our hectic lives, we could all probably use some pampering.

Perhaps there are other locations that I can investigate along the shore. Maybe we can try looking into Atlantic City or Cape May, which is close to Wildwood, or maybe the Hotel Hershey, which has spa and wine weekend packages. I will definitely have to keep looking for trip ideas.
