Local Walking and Biking Trails

For exercise buffs, there are several good spots to try.

Summer is the perfect time to get away from the gym and hit the great outdoors for exercise. Luckily, there are several great options in the area for both walkers and cyclists. These are just few of the choices available in Mercer County:

Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail: This trail runs for more than 65 miles along the Delaware and Raritan Canal and extends from New Brunswick in Middlesex County to Trenton. The trail, which is a mixture of crushed stone, dirt and gravel, goes through many beautiful wooded areas. It is a boon for runners and cyclists who want to log in lots of miles. My favorite places to hop on the trail include Kingston, off Route 27, and on Princeton’s Alexander Road. Back when I was a runner, I used to start in Kingston and take the trail up to Rocky Hill and back for a good-sized jog.

Bear Brook Pathway: Much shorter in length, this trail follows a brook behind the Hickory Corner Road Branch of the Mercer County Library System in East Windsor and goes to East Windsor’s Wiltshire Park. The pathway is perfect for a short walk, or for a mini bike ride (between playgrounds) with the kids. My family likes to take the
trail from Anker Park (with its merry-go-round and duck pond) to Wiltshire Park, which also has pretty decent play equipment for elementary-school-aged kids.

Mercer County Park: Mercer County Park, which expands 2,500 acres, includes a mountain biking area, plenty of roads conducive to cycling, and hiking and walking trains. You could choose to walk along the marina, bike the roads throughout the park, or take to any of the park’s wooded trails.
