Andrew DeCaen Art Exhibition at The Peddie School

The exhibition begins March 22 and runs until April 17 in Mariboe Gallery Peddie's campus in Hightstown.

The following release was issued by The Peddie School:

The Mariboe Gallery at The Peddie School is proud to present “Sustenance,” an installation and exhibition by Texas-based artist Andrew DeCaen. The exhibition will run from March 22 - April 17, 2013. There will be an opening reception and artist talk on the evening of Friday, March 22, from 6:30 – 8 pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Andrew DeCaen is an artist whose work explores and often mixes drawing, printmaking, and paper sculpture. In this exhibition, he will present works that explore the hidden significance in eating. The works offer moments of epiphany, disconnect, distraction, or venial transgression by layering images of the meal with images connecting it to food science, food packaging, or food etiquette. Time is often implied through frames of sequential images of a mundane moment or through a quoted fragment from film. The exhibition will feature works that combine lithography, monotype, and screenprints. DeCaen uses the two-dimensional matrix of the print to create paper sculptures that borrow freely from food packaging. The sculptures also make odd combinations of materials such as ceramic plates and silverpoint drawings on folded paper.

One wall in the gallery will feature a series of paper lunch trays that will be shown in various states of construction and deconstruction. The trays will be the product of a three day collaborative projects with advanced art students at The Peddie School. The piece aims to suggest ideas about dietary habits and their malleability.

DeCaen’s artworks have been shown broadly in the US and internationally in Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Romania, and Turkey. DeCaen’s drawings are the subject of Drawing Magazine’s winter 2013 New and Notable feature. His paper sculpture will be featured in the upcoming publication of 500 Paper Objects. DeCaen lives and works in Denton, Texas where he is an Assistant Professor of Art and the Printmaking Area Coordinator at the University of North Texas.
