Russian Artist Yevgeniy Fiks to Speak on his Soviet and Post-Soviet Art

West Windsor, NJ:  Yevgeniy Fiks, professor of visual arts at Mercer County Community College (MCCC), will discuss some of his recent art projects as they relate to Soviet and Post-Soviet history in a talk “Soviet and Post-Soviet Art,”on Thursday, April 5, at noon in the Communications Building, Room 109, at MCCC’s West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.  The talk is the third in the college's Spring 2012 Distinguished Lecture Series. 

Born and raised in Moscow, Professor Fiks will present his work in the context of Soviet and post-Soviet history, and the developments in Russian art after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.  “My work is inspired by the collapse of the Soviet bloc, which led me to reexamine the Soviet experience in the context of the international Communist movement,” said Professor Fiks.

“Having grown up and having been educated in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, my work is about carving out a space for critique both without and within the Soviet experience. Having lived in New York since 1994, I’m particularly interested in the history of the American Communist movement and the way it manifests itself in the present-day United States,” he said.

Professor Fiks’ work has been shown internationally at museums such as the Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art; the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and Marat Guelman Gallery in Moscow; Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in Mexico City; and the Museu Colecção Berardo in Lisbon. His work has been included in the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2011, 2009, 2007 and 2005), Biennale of Sydney (2008) and Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007).
