Something is Blooming at the Cutting Garden

The Cranbury flower shop will reopen May 1.

If you come out of the post office on Main Street in Cranbury and jump over the last remaining piles of December snow, the last thing on your “to do" list is picking up a colorful bouquet of spring flowers.

But if you glance over to 70 North Main ST. on any given Friday or Saturday starting May 1, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what is on the front porch.

Under the guidance of Kathy Burke, The Cutting Garden has brought a fragrant flair to Cranbury. Since the spring of 2009, Burke has met the unique needs of those looking for a more personal touch to their floral designs and special arrangements. As a newcomer to Cranbury, Burke discovered that opening a floral business was an effective way to meet her neighbors and develop new friendships.

When asked why she tried her hand at a flower shop in Cranbury Burke noted that she had a floral kiosk in North Carolina as well as experience with flower shops in Colorado.

According to Burke, one of the most rewarding aspects of her home-based business is being able to spend more time with her children, attend special events at the Cranbury School and still operate her floral shop.

All is not a bed of roses though. When asked to recall a challenge in her shop, Kathy said, “In some ways I wish I had more space and perhaps a cooler so as to service walk-in customers.”

The Cutting Garden prides itself in giving back to the Cranbury area. Recently, Burke led a Holiday Fairy Tea Party with the support of the . She has just concluded a Valentines Day project with the Cranbury Lions Club in which she donated a portion of the sale of her flowers back to the Lions.

This spring, The Cutting Garden will also be arranging flowers for at least three upcoming weddings.

When asked about the unique advantages as well as challenges of a home-based business, Burke noted that the Cranbury community is unique. It is comforting to know that in the fall and winter there are many local repeat customers such as The Elms Rehabilitation Facility and other local businesses.

When asked if she could wave a magic wand over her floral shop, she replied, “I'd want to have more space but then I might lose some of the personal touch I now can offer.”

Asked if she had any advice for aspiring small business owners, Kathy Burke paused a moment and offered this: “Get to know your neighbors, your community and meet their needs.”

If you want a more personal touch and excellent customer service on any of your future floral needs, give Kathy Burke a call at The Cutting Garden in Cranbury. A new relationship may blossom.
