2,000 Motorcycles Expected in Hightstown for America's 9/11 Ride

Motorcyclists are riding through town on Saturday to honor the heroes and victims of Sept. 11.

Flags and fire trucks will line the streets of Hightstown Saturday as America’s 9/11 Ride passes through downtown on its way to the site of the former World Trade Center.

The yearly commemorative ride is a tribute to the heroes, volunteers and victims who lost their lives 10 years ago when terrorists hijacked four commercial planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York City and one at the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth plane, which had targeted Washington, D.C., crashed in rural Pennsylvania after its passengers put up a fight against the terrorists.

The memorial ride will travel along Route 130, exit at Mercer Street near Walmart and Home Depot, and travel up North Main Street through downtown Hightstown, re-entering Route 130 at the Cranbury traffic circle.

Approximately 2,000 motorcyclist are expected to particpate in Saturday’s ride which will reach downtown Hightstown around 2:30 to 3 p.m., said Butch Budai, a New Jersey representative for the ride. Budai, a resident of Manalapan, said he will be riding his Harley Davidson Saturday.

“I think we will have a lot of people lining the streets,” Budai said.

Spectators are encouraged to bring flags and don patriotic clothing to help cheer on the riders and show their support for those who put their lives at risk for others or lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Children and families are sure to enjoy the event, which will feature thousands of riders and motorcycles of all shapes and sizes, Budai said. All sorts of bikes are permitted to participate in the event, including sport bikes, foreign bikes, domestic bikes, trikes, side cars, choppers and home-made bikes.

The ride, which begins Thursday, Aug. 18 in Pennsylvania and will connect all three crash sites of September 11, will pass by the Pentagon, and will then conclude at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan on Sunday.

Money raised through the sponsorship ride will be used to provide educational scholarships to the children of first responders who served that tragic day.

According to the ride’s website, americas911ride.org, its foundation has provided $180,000 in scholarships to more than 70 children of first responders, and at least $250,000 to first responders’ departments and their families.
