Award Winning 10-Year-Old Performs with VOICES Chorale

Emily DeLia composed the piece when she was eight.

East Windsor resident Emily DeLia is a three time Gold winner of VOICES Chorale's young composers' contest and performed recently with the chorale.

The 10-year-old wrote the Christmas song "That's What Christmas Is To Me" when she was eight-years-old and entered it in the contest last year.

“They liked it so much that not only did she win gold, but they requested to perform the piece in their annual Christmas concert,” said Mary DeLia, Emily’s mother, in an email.

Emily joined the 65-member chorale last weekend, singing the solo portions of her own composition and the first verse of Once in Royal David's City.

VOICES director, Lyn Ransom, contacted the DeLia’s during the summer about performing in the annual Christmas concert, Mary DeLia said. Emily had to re-write the song in canon form, adding an eight part chorus since the original song was written for piano, solo voice and two part chorus.

“Having her music performed by a chorale of this caliber is an extreme honor for Emily,” Mary DeLia said. “Emily's piece was sung beautifully by the choir, and very well received.”
