Cranbury Public Library Introduces “One Book, One Cranbury” Program

The program is aimed at promoting literacy and historical preservation

Cranbury Mayor David Cook and the Township Committee proclaimed support of the Cranbury Public Library’s “One Book, One Cranbury” program during Monday night’s meeting.

According to the mayor’s proclamation, the program is designed to promote literacy and historical preservation and to foster a sense of community by bringing people together through literature and appreciation of local history.

The library has selected Cranbury: A New Jersey Town from the Colonial Era to the Present by John Whiteclay Chambers, II, as its featured book for 2012-2013.

“This particular subject I think is very important to all of us,” Cook said. “I think it ties in with the community–it’s one of the threads of the community.”

The library, in partnership with the Cranbury Historical & Preservation Society, will offer a variety of programs each month throughout the year focusing on the history of New Jersey, especially Cranbury, as detailed in the book.

“Our goal is to foster a sense of community by bringing people together to discuss our town’s history,” said library director Marilynn Mullen. “We hope everyone will read the book and attend the upcoming events.”

The first event, Stories from Early Cranbury, is October 27 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Cranbury Barn Park. The event for children 8- to 13- years-old and their families will feature Don Davidson in early colonial costume telling stories of Cranbury’s history. Children may come dressed as an early settler or American Indian. In case of rain, the event will be held in the library.

Funding for the program was provided by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission, Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders through a grant provided by New Jersey Historical Commission.

Cranbury: A New Jersey Town from the Colonial Era to the Present is available sale at the Cranbury Library or may be purchased at the Library or the History Center for $29.95.

A complete list of the events that will be offered is below and available on the library’s website.
