East Windsor Council Passes Solar Power Resolution

Township to begin bidding process for installing alternative power for municipal court/police building power.

The East Windsor Township Council passed a resolution Tuesday night to start the competitive contracting for a solar power supply for the municipal court/police building.

The town hopes to weigh its options for a purchase power arrangement, which would be a shorter process than purchasing and constructing a solar panel array.

Mayor Janice S. Mironov hopes to evaluate the project’s timetable as well as the financial consequences and benefits for the township.

“We should go forward and decide a means of a purchase power arrangement,” she said. “We need to move quickly and maximize benefits.”

Mironov said the plan was intended to be aggressive, and that a start by the end of the year would certainly help the township.

The council members were all excited about the idea and were eager to get started in their passing of the resolution.

Deputy Mayor Marc Lippman asked to see a comparison between ownership of a solar array versus a purchase power arrangement to truly determine the cost effectiveness of their decision.

“It’s a very exciting concept for the township,” he said.

Councilman Peter Yeager agreed the plan was aggressive, but necessary.

“We’re looking at this for all municipal buildings,” he said. “It sounds necessary to get some savings.”

Councilman Alan Rosenberg said he was happy to see this begin as it means more projects like this for other municipal buildings.

“I’m glad we’re hitting the ground running,” he said. “It’s an exciting prospect.”
