Free Helmet for "Use Your Head" Participants

The program is open to residents ages five through 16.

East Windsor Township is giving out free bicycle helmets to residents, ages five through 16, for the “Use Your Head” program promoting bike safety, according to a news release from the Township.

“I believe it is a worthy goal of the Township to undertake this pro-active education and outreach campaign to promote helmet use and educate especially young people on the importance of bicycle helmet safety,” Mironov said in a news release.

Residents ages five through 16 can come to the on Oct. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m., view a five-minute video on bike safety and be fitted for a free helmet, the release said. Participants will also receive safety information with the helmet.

“’Use Your Head’ geared to children under 17 is intended to enhance safety by increasing awareness of the laws requiring helmet wear, promoting helmet usage and instructing on correct helmet use and fit,” Mironov said. “It is a basic accepted statistic that approximately 85 percent of head injuries by bicyclers could be prevented by wearing a bicycle helmet.”
