Great Escape: Bucks County Wineries
Hop over the Delaware and into Pennsylvania for vineyard tours and tastings.
When you think of wineries and vineyards, you’re more likely to think of Napa, California, than Bucks County, Pennsylvania. But just over the Delaware is the Bucks County Wine Trail, which offers nine wineries in all. Visit just one winery, take your own self-driving tour of several wineries and vineyards, or enjoy a bus wine tour and let someone else do the driving. These are just a few of the options available in Bucks County’s wine country:

Established by the Carroll family in 2000, the award-winning Crossroads Vineyards and Winery produced its first vintage in 2002. Located in the heart of Bucks County, the vineyards and winery offers wine education, a wine store, summer concerts and tours. On Sunday, May 15, Crossroads Vineyards and Winery will be a stop on a self-driving tour of nine Bucks County vineyards. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Among upcoming classes at Crossroads Vineyards and Winery are a chocolate and wine pairing class on Sunday, April 3 for $35 a person, and a wine and cheese pairing class on Thursday, April 7 for $35 a person. Check out Crossroads’ calendar of events for other classes.

Housed in a castle that was built in the 1980s on 72 acres on the banks of the Delaware River, the Sand Castle Winery was founded by Joseph and Paul Maxian, who were both raised in the winemaking region of Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. All of Sand Castle Winery’s vintages are made from its own vinifera grapes. Open daily, the winery offers guided tours, a gallery filled with unique gifts and wine tastings. The basic Cellar Tour and Tasting, held on Saturdays and Sundays, is $10 for adults (and $5 for minors). The winery will also be on the May 15 Bucks County Wine Trail Tour.

This company offers Bucks County vineyard and winery tours in buses and vans that can accommodate 5 to 15 people, or even more people, Tuesdays through Sundays for $89 a person. The approximately five-hour tours include visits to three wineries (where passengers can enjoy wine tastings, sometimes pairing the wines with cheeses, fruit or chocolate), plus lunch at one of three local restaurants. There are also private tours available for special occasions.
