Mayor and Council Weigh Right-Turn Lane on Route 33
Businesses are thanked and road projects discussed during East Windsor meeting
The East Windsor Township Council discussed adding a right turn lane on Route 33 onto Hickory Corner Road Westbound and passed several resolutions at its meeting last night in the East Windsor Municipal Building.
Mayor Janice S. Mironov said she had written a letter to the New Jersey Department of Transportation about how the addition would facilitate the flow of traffic, which the department responded to by saying it is willing to review the request.
The plan of action would involve re-striping the shoulder area to allow for a right-hand turn, but the department is unsure that is all that needs to be done, as the pavement may not be able to hold the volume of cars the lane would facilitate.
If more work is to be done besides the striping, the township would have to pay 25 percent of the road work costs.
The Department of Transportation requires a written commitment from the township for this to take effect, so the council will pass this as a resolution in its next meeting. The council stated that it was not committing any funds at this point.
The council also discussed honoring its business owners and continuing with the 2011 Business Awards.
“I think it’s a nice community program that businesses appreciate,” said Marc Lippman, deputy mayor.

Councilman Alan Rosenberg agreed that the awards were the council’s way of thanking businesses for all of their work.
“They devote themselves (to serving) our community, it would be nice to publicly thank them,” he said.
The council also discussed municipal roadway projects at the meeting, with Mironov suggesting the township invest money into its roadway account.

After surveying ideas from the township’s public works manager, the council decided to continue working on the area known as Warren Park by Meadow Lane and Elm Street. The council also agreed to address improvements to Hankins Road. Because that roadway is shared with Robbinsville Township, Mironov indicated that she had already spoken with Robbinsville and they support pursuing a joing project.
The council passed a resolution that approved the purchase of ammunition, weapons parts and cleaning/maintenance supplies for the East Windsor Township Police Department.
Price quotes for the ammunition and weapons were collected from six different vendors and the township settled on the lowest offer, from a state contract. One man at the meeting wondered if the township would always buy off a state contract or consider the lowest price quote.
Mironov said after viewing the state contract, five other quotes were solicited to see if they were lower, but the state had the lowest offer.
“It’s the best bang for our buck, no pun intended,” Mironov said.
