Peddler's Village Celebrates Arts and Crafts

The annual Fine Arts and Contemporary Crafts Show in Bucks County, Pa., celebrates 20 years in 2012.

Continuing the theme of festivals and outdoor events, this week’s Day Tripper destination finds Peddler's Village (Routes 202 & 263, Lahaska, Pa.) readying the 20th edition of its Fine Arts and Contemporary Crafts Show.

This juried outdoor exhibition features original artwork including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, jewelry and contemporary crafts with cash prizes being awarded in three categories: "Fine Art," "Contemporary Crafts," and "Photography.”

Eve Gelman, public relations manager for Peddler’s Village, wanted to make sure people understood this was not merely an insider’s contest. “All the artists will be displaying their work on the Main Green of Peddler’s Village, which is a beautifully landscaped section, and children especially enjoy watching as the art is being made there.”

Aside from the presentations, live entertainment and children's activities where they will get the opportunity to make their own crafts will also be on hand.

Peddler’s Village on an ordinary day offers a scenic array of colonial-style buildings, gardens, shopping options and much more. This scenic destination spot has been in Pennsylvania for 50 years, and visitors have walked its brick pathways to the area’s array of dining possibilities and enjoyed family fun at Giggleberry Fair, their amusement center.

Their 50th anniversary offerings promise a year full of special birthday festivities, contests, promotions, signature 50th anniversary merchandise, and of course, the annual Fine Arts & Contemporary Crafts Show on Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. While Peddler’s Village would always be a nice trip to take, this year’s circumstances highlight its unique spirit, so we’ve made it this installment of Day Tripper, a weekly look at destinations that are out of town, but in reach, and worth the trip.

DAY TRIPPER DIGEST

Estimated Travel Time: 55 minutes

Why it’s Worth the Trip: Any day at Peddler’s Village is a good day, but for 2012 you can get into the anniversary mood, and for the Fine Arts and Contemporary Crafts Show you can see creative minds and hands at work in the warm late-springtime weather.

How to Get There From HereDetailed driving directions.

You’ll Probably Get HungryThe Buttonwood Grill is Peddler’s Village’s latest restaurant with scenic outdoor dining, but you also have old favorites like The Cock & BullHart’s TavernPeddler’s Pub, and for the kids the Painted Pony Café at Giggleberry Fair (more in a moment) all within walking distance, so give the car a rest and go for a stroll.

While You’re in the Area: For the kids, Giggleberry Fair is an amusement center featuring an indoor obstacle course, a carousel, a game room and a lot more – designed to get your kids good and tired. Peddler's Village is in the midst of lots of purchasing options, from Bucks County outlet shopping to Antiques Row along Route 202, to New Hope, Pa. shops and flea markets.

More than 40 of the region’s best artists will exhibit and sell a variety of work including paintings, photography, wood creations, mixed media, jewelry, pottery, glasswork, fiber creations, and ceramics.

Gelman said the definition of “region” however is rather broad. “We’re really talking about the entire Mid-Atlantic Region, so we have artists and craftspeople arriving from Pennsylvania, New York State, New Jersey, Delaware and the Washington D.C. area.”

Artists were juried in by a committee of art experts, ensuring only the highest quality of exhibited work. Judges ranging from fellow local artists, art professors, and art dealers will select show winners on Saturday, awarding $2,000 in cash prizes. One artist will receive the Founders Award and Peddler’s Village will purchase the artwork for the Jamison Family’s art collection on permanent display in the Village.

“The origination of the show came from Peddler’s Village’s founder Earl Jamison who wanted to celebrate the arts as well (as the Village’s historical setting),” Gelman said. “It started very small but now we’re up to more than forty exhibiting artists and participants.”

The Village also has live entertainment planned for visitors: Saturday, June 2 from Noon to 2 p.m. features jazz ensemble A Perfect 5th at the Main Green Gazebo. Peter Pix will play cover songs at the Courtyard starting at 1 to 3 p.m.

2 to 4 p.m. offers Rendition, a swing-jazz group, at the Main Green Balcony.

Sunday, June 3 finds the duo The Overtones playing the Main Green Balcony from Noon to 2 p.m.

1 to 3 p.m. has blues/funk musician Tony Alosi at the Courtyard.

1 to 3 p.m. gives Jersey Harmony Chorus, an a’Capelle unit, strolling the grounds as they perform. Last but not least, 2 to 4 p.m. has the Eric Mintel Quartet at the Gazebo.

The Peddler’s Village 50th Anniversary Landscape Design Competition in partnership with Delaware Valley College also kicks off on this weekend. Students from DelVal were chosen from a group of ten landscape design students who competed for their designs to be planted on the Peddler’s Village Street Road Green flower beds: Christopher Casola, Junior, Ornamental Horticulture/Environmental Design; Cecilia Probst, Junior, Ornamental Horticulture/Environmental; and Kristen Ryan, Senior, Floriculture. The public can vote at Peddler’s Village for their favorite design from June 2 through Aug. 13. The winner of the competition will be announced on Sep. 15.

The show is held rain or shine. Admission and parking are free, and Eve Gelman reminded all that, “The area is very visit-friendly with thousands of parking spaces all throughout Peddler’s Village. Come early and stay all day. We look forward to seeing you here!”
