Six Nonprofits Making a Difference

These local groups have a positive effect on the community.

A.F.E.W. is a network of foster homes for pets, and it holds adoption days each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at . You can also drop off donations during those days, and who knows—you might meet a new member of your family!

Working parents in the Hightstown-East Windsor area can benefit from affordable childcare five days a week. The bilingual, full-day preschool program runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and is priced on a sliding scale. Volunteers receive training and have a wealth of options for placement, including in classrooms, chaperoning trips, raising funds and helping with Wednesday's after-school Book Day.

Since its inception a few years ago, Downtown Hightstown has been very active in revitalizing the borough's downtown with projects like the weekly farmers market that began last summer, the trellis on Main Street, the  that brought students from the Peddie School and Hightstown High School together for the first time in recent memory and the new . The group is always seeking volunteers who can contribute their own unique talents.

Next Level Youth has been focusing on youth education and development in New Jersey since 2006. Locally, kids in grades 3-7 can benefit from free tutoring from this group, while older kids (grades 8-12) can receive free mentoring. Sessions are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the , and that's also the time to come and see how you can help.

This local nonprofit tackles a number of issues affecting the borough and the surrounding area. Along with its North Main Street location, its most visible fronts include the Greater Goods Thrift Shop just down the road and the it co-runs with . The pantry is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. The group also offers help with emergency rooming and boarding, as well as counseling for victims of domestic violence. Donations are always welcome.

runs this pantry, which is open to anyone who needs it. Hours are every third Friday of every month starting at 8:30 a.m. Like at the Rise pantry, donations of money, non-perishable food and personal and baby care items are always needed. Bring them to the church on Sundays, or to the church's parish house.
