The bridge will connect to the adjacent parking lot in downtown Hightstown. The committee said the bridge will celebrate the history of Memorial Park, and will be lined with steel medallions depicting a turtle, log cabin, water wheel, blacksmith, wheat chaff and the U.S. Flag, according to the Greenway Bridge Committee website. The medallions tell the story of Memorial Park and will alternate along the bridge along with the Letter “H,” which stands for Hightstown.

Hahn said the plan to build a new bridge came three years ago when the over 80-year-old bridge was deemed unsafe and removed. Hightstown resident Taylor Bell asked if she could help raise money to replace the bridge during a council meeting. Bell, who loved to walk over the falls, raised $1,000 through a coin collection at her middle school, Hahn said.

Hahn then met with the mayor and the Greenway Bridge committee was appointed. The committee met in April of 2010, and spent five months creating a plan. The council approved the plan in August of 2010 and fundraising began in September 2010, Hahn said.

All proceeds from Saturday’s benefit concert will go towards rebuilding the Peddie Lake walking bridge.

The concert, sponsored by the , will sell Oktoberfest-themed food for $5, including knockwurst, pork, chicken and veggie skewers, according to the fair’s website. A 21+ beer garden with $4 beers will also be set up by and there will be a 50/50 raffle sponsored by the Hightstown Women’s Auxiliary.

You can purchase tickets for $10 in advance, $20 the day of the event. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.
