Tips for Winter Skin Protection

Five easy ways to keep skin happy in the cold.

Winter not only brings harsher weather with winds and cold temperatures, but the lack of moisture tends to make these months much more unforgiving on our skin than the summer months.  This lack of moisture causes skin to dry out and can lead to itchiness, redness and cracking.

Yolanda Russo, owner and esthetician at Speranzi Spa in Bloomfield, offers five preventative measures you can take to be sure your skin continues to glow even through the winter.

1. Moisturize.  You should moisturize your face twice daily after cleansing.  During the colder months, you may have to switch to a richer moisturizer, since skin tends to be much drier.  The best moisturizers absorb quickly and do not leave a residue. Russo does not recommend using Vaseline.  Because it is petroleum based and does not absorb into the skin, it only leaves a thick residue that clogs the pores and doesn’t allow the skin to breathe.  Russo suggests putting on moisturizer as soon as you’re out of the shower, while your skin is still damp.  This helps seal in moisture and can keep skin from drying out.  You may also want to add a humidifier to your home to keep moisture in the air.

2. Protect.  Not only do we need to protect against wind and cold, but the sun is just as damaging in the winter as the summer.  You can prevent crows feet and sun damage by using a moisturizer with sun protection.  The skin on the lips is similar to the skin under the eyes.  Be sure to use a lip balm that contains an SPF.  To avoid cracked skin on the hands, dry them well, apply moisturizer immediately after washing and wear gloves when outside.

3.  Stay hydrated.  Drink plenty of water and juice during the winter months.  Water helps keep the skin hydrated, while antioxidants found in juices will help prevent a cold.  Hint:  Dry lips are the first signs of dehydration.

4.  Get plenty of sleep.  When you sleep, your skin goes through a natural renewal process.  Consider adding a night moisturizer to your routine to help the regeneration. Plus, a well-rested body gives you more energy to contend with the cold.

5.  Get a facial.  A facial is a great way to keep your skin healthy and to rejuvenate cell renewal.  Not only is it good for your skin, it is a great “pick me up” during the long winter months.
