Try a Trip to Doylestown, Pa.

There you'll find museums, a giant kids castle, downtown shopping and more.

Tucked within the beautiful farmland of Bucks County, Pa., just west of the Delaware River, is Doylestown, Pa., a historic town that dates back to the mid-1700s. With its museums, vibrant downtown and parks just off US-202 and just over 30 miles from Princeton, Doylestown makes for a great day trip from Central New Jersey.

Families with kids might want to start out the day at Central Park on Wells Road. At the park is the amazing Kids Castle, an eight-story-high wooden playground structure that children can climb and slide on. The park also has tennis and basketball courts, swings, picnic pavilions and 1.5 miles of hiking/biking/jogging trails.

In town are the Mercer Museum, a five-story masonry “castle” that houses exhibits on American craftsmanship, and the James A. Michener Art Museum, named for the author, which is in a former jail and features renowned works of art and pieces by local Bucks County artists. Outside, there is an outdoor sculpture garden.

Those who appreciate history and architecture may want to download Doylestown’s self-guided walking tour. It includes addresses and photos of several historic homes throughout the town, with information on the homes’ architectural styles and history.

Downtown, there are many places to stop for refreshments. When visiting last weekend, my family and I enjoyed hot cocoa, coffee and tea at Saxby's Coffee at 22 N. Main St. and borrowed the shop’s deck of UNO cards for an impromptu card game. On exhibit at the coffee shop this month are photographic works by local artists – all prints on display are also for sale.

For lunch or dinner, stop in any of Doylestown’s many restaurants. Fans of southern barbecue will enjoy Smoking’ Lil’s, a casual restaurant that makes everything it serves on the premises, with signature dishes like pulled pork and chicken, chili, wings, corn bread and collard greens. (The corn bread and collard greens are especially tasty.)

For shoppers, Doylestown’s downtown offers a wide array of shops, from unique boutiques to national retailers like Talbot’s, Chicos and the Gap.
