Weekend Guide: Remembering Sept. 11

Annual Cranbury Day is also on Saturday.

Local towns will remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 with memorial ceremonies and moments of reflection Sunday.

Cranbury Township is participating in the at 1 p.m. Emergency responders will blare sirens and the First Presbyterian Church of Cranbury will ring bells to remember the events of 9/11.

In Hightstown, the Hightstown Engine Company No. 1 is holding a at 6:30 p.m. in . In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the firehouse’s banquet hall.

East Windsor Township is hosting a on the grounds of East Windsor’s at 2 p.m Sunday. During the ceremony, a wreath will be laid on the Township’s 9/11 memorial. Trees, pavers and park benches will be added.

“We lost more residents than any other town in Mercer County,” said East Windsor Mayor Janice Mironov, who noted six residents died in the terrorist attacks 10 years ago.

“Obviously, the event touched many people here,” she said.

Participants in Sunday’s memorial service include local religious leaders, local police, fire and rescue squads, East Windsor Regional Schools Superintendent Edward Forsthoffer, area Boy and Girl Scouts, local veteran groups, bagpipers and various groups from Hightstown High School, including chamber singers.

Friday, Sept. 9:

Saturday, Sept. 10:

  • Cranbury Township will hold its annual downtown from 10 a.m. t0 4 p.m. There will be food, games for children and vendors of all kinds. The Cranbury Police will have a table at the event, where they will be registering bikes belonging to Cranbury residents to help with returning bikes if it's lost or stolen.
  • There will be an AFEW Adoption Day at from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be dogs and cats available for adoption.
  • The , a project of RISE, a community service partnership in Hightstown, will accept donated items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations can include clothing and household items in good condition.

Sunday, Sept. 11:

  • The will hold a from 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibit includes local photos, letters and written accounts of the war, as well as artifacts from the war. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
