Can we have a frank chat about driving around town lately? As in how bad it is?

Driving around Toms River lately...what gives???

Over the past few weeks, it has become very obvious to many of my inner circle of friends that traffic and accidents around Toms River is at an all-time high right now.  Every time I get in my car, I am either witnessing an accident or nearly getting into one, and I know that I'm not the only one.  I know I'm not being dramatic.  My one good friend was rear-ended TWICE in one night.  My mother was rear-ended last week and felt so terribly for the woman who hit her that she just told her to go home (woman and family had lost her home in Sandy, child in hospital)...another friend was in a multi-car collision with air bags deployed.  This is just my small circle.  And when we all say..."hey, have you noticed how BAD it is out there" with traffic everyone is coming up with war stories of their own and jam-ups. No end.  What is happening???

No doubt this has a lot to do with the stress many people have post-Sandy...many have lost a lot or are displaced...distracted.  Volume on our roads is at an all-time high due to extra people in town.  And lets not forget we're about to hit Thanksgiving...and then Christmas.  All of this is beyond our collective control.

The reason I went through the pain of posting this is not to complain, but to simply put it out there that given what we're seeing and what we have experienced the past few weeks...take a deep breath and please do your best to pay attention while driving out there.  We all want to get to the holidays and beyond in one piece and work to recover what we've lost.  No need to add to the mess we're already working to clean up.  Heads up, people!!!  At least have the presence of mind while driving if you can.  Be aware...and my own advice, shop online this season!  I'm not leaving this house unless I have to!

Happy Thanksgiving, Toms River!  We have lots to be thankful for...what a great community we have.  Stay safe!

i've noticed after 2pm it backs up. I think it is everyone leaving the barrier island before 3. Fischer than hooper get backed up for hours after that. Combine that with the college and holiday shoppers, becareful, stay off the roads then if you can. I went from walnut street to silver bay road yesterday and it took me 42 minutes.

I have noticed an unusual amount of out of state plates the past several weeks as well. Witnessed many trying to make left hand turns along 37. Culmination of the additional residents from the barriers, volunteer workers from all over, secondary homeowners trying to get in and work on their homes, construction crews from all over the state now working here as well as people from other states flooding in looking for work? You have to put on your "summer driving" mind set and take a deep breath, pay attention and leave plenty of room between you and the others. Be safe =)

oh I forgot to mention one more group thats causing major traffic issues.... every single state and local politician, and/or official, swooping in for photo ops.

You're spot on about the illegal left turns. Sad thing is some of these out of state trucks are the worse offenders. They're here to help but a small minority are causing accidents.
