East Windsor Obituary: Dorothea Whitfield McCarthy, 94

Whitfield McCarthy was an avid swimmer, swimming up until the age of 90.

Dorothea Whitfield McCarthy, formerly of East Windsor, died on April 2, 2013, at the Masonic Home of New Jersey, under the care of Acacia Hospice, at the age of 94.

Born in London, England, to Henry John and Lillian Chandler, she trained as a nurse before coming to the United States as the fiancee of George Whitfield, who she met while he was stationed in England during World War II. They were married in April 1947 in New York City. She resided in Staten Island, NY, from 1949 to 1992. She was active in Girl Scouts, her church, and served as the president of her children's school PTOs. She returned to college and obtained a B.S. degree in psychology in 1977.

After the death of her first husband, she married Eugene McCarthy in 1972. The McCarthys moved to East Windsor in 1992. While living in East Windsor she was active in the East Windsor Senior Center; St Paul's Lutheran Church, where she served as church librarian and assisted with Daily Vacation Bible School, and served on the East Windsor Council of Aging. An avid swimmer, she continued to swim until she was age 90. After the death of Eugene McCarthy, she resided at St. James and Wheaton Pointe senior housing buildings.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Cantoni and her husband, Roger, of Princeton; her son, Stephen Whitfield and his wife, Marylou, of Naperville, IL; her daughter, Barbara Whitfield and her husband, Everitt Gordon, of Cotati, CA; her sisters, Thelma Cousins and Phyllis Groom, and her brother, Norman Chandler. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Meredith LaBrie of Monmouth Junction, Alyssa Cantoni of Hoboken, Andrew Whitfield of Warrenville, IL, and Kirk Whitfield of Naperville, IL.

Funeral services will begin on Friday, April 5, 2013, at 9 a.m. at the Glackin/Saul Funeral Home, 136 Morrison Ave., Hightstown, NJ. A church service will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 79 One Mile Road Ext., East Windsor, NJ, with the Reverend James R. Egan officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Green Park Cemetery, Morganville, NJ. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Glackin/Saul Funeral Home, 136 Morrison Ave., Hightstown, NJ 08520.
