James Elliot Garner

The former East Windsor councilman died April 3.

James Garner, 60, of East Windsor, died April 3 at the University Medical Center Princeton.

James was born in Brookline, Mass. on April 11, 1950. He grew up in Springfield, N.J., where he attended high school. He graduated from Bard College with a B.A. and earned masters' degrees in English and psychology at Montclair State College and Columbia University.

He worked for the NJ State Treasury, Department of the Lottery. He retired from the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services as a research scientist. He also taught English and psychology at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, College of New Jersey and other state colleges.

He is survived by his parents Eleanor and Sidney Garner,  brother Robert Garner (Tracey) and longtime friend and companion Joan J. Tomlin, as well as several cousins and many friends, including Jon Baumunk, Myron Meisel, Ray Boxer and Robert Kicklighter.

He enjoyed politics and served on the East Windsor Township Council from 1994 through 1997.  Garner's other enjoyments were skiing, scuba diving, swimming, and bike riding. Literature and art were also special to him; he loved theatre, opera, jazz, blues, and classical music. Traveling with Joan was an important part of his life as well as the study of the Jewish faith.

Funeral arrangements were provided by Saul Funeral Homes, Inc.  The funeral ceremony was conducted at graveside in Floral Park Cemetery, Monmouth Junction on April 5. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
