Lifelong Hightstown Resident Dies at 85

Edward Hayes was a former school crossing guard in Hightstown.

Edward Hayes, 85, of Hightstown died on Oct. 22 at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro. Born in Newark, Hayes was a Hightstown resident most of his life. He was a school crossing guard for the Borough of Hightstown for many years. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Hightstown, a life member of the Hightstown Engine Co. No. 1 Fire/Police, and a member of the Freemasons of Princeton. Hayes served as grand marshal of the Hightstown Memorial Day Parade in 2012.

He is survived by one niece and one nephew. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 21 Rev. William L. Powell Dr., Hightstown, with the Rev. Bernard Fowler, pastor, officiating. Calling hours will be held at the church from 6 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home, Hightstown.
