OBITUARY: William H. Schwartz

William H. Schwartz, Jr., 67, died Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Elms of Cranbury.

Born in Jersey City, he moved to Wood-Ridge in 1951, and had resided in East Windsor for the past 28 years.

He attended Wood-Ridge High School, where he was an all-star basketball player in 1963 and held the school’s scoring record of 48 points in the state tournament game.  His record held for 50 years.  His contributions to the basketball team led to their status as Group I Runner Up Champions, and he was elected to the Wood-Ridge High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

He was a graduate of Trenton State College in 1968, and received his Master’s Degree from Seton Hall University in 1981.

In 1968 he began teaching for East Brunswick Public Schools.  Prior to his retirement in 2007, he taught Industrial Arts Technology, and was appointed Media Specialist at Hammarskjold Middle School, where he worked for 40 years.  He received the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award in 2000, and was elected to the East Brunswick Public Schools Wall of Honor in 2010, in recognition of his outstanding service.  He was a member of NJEA for 40 years, and an active leader of the East Brunswick Education Association for 35 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hilda and William Schwartz, Sr., and a sister, Hilda Ann VanDine.

Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Catherine Hill Schwartz; a sister, Alice Gavin; a sister-in-law and brother-in aw, Laraine and Robert Meehan; a brother in law, John Melone; many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and cherished friends Chet Maciorowski, Powell and Diane Saks, Linda Geraci, Cindy Collins, Debi McEniry, and many other  friends.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. in the Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.  Private cremation will follow.  Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O.
