Cranbury's CERT Team Keeping Kids Safe During Halloween

Kids can pick up flashing buttons on Main Street starting around 5 p.m. tonight.

To help kids stay safe while trick or treating tonight, Cranbury’s Community Emergency Response Team will be handing out flashing buttons, patrolling Main Street and serving as a crossing guard at key intersections.

Cranbury Township Police Lt. Frank Dillane said the CERT members will be stationed on Main Street between Cranbury Pizza and the firehouse starting at around 5 p.m. giving out flashing buttons to children.

“They seem to really enjoy this and it becomes a safety [feature],” CERT team leader Frank Geraci said in an email.

About six CERT members will be helping out for Halloween, Dillane said.

The CERT members are trained to help out in different situations, Dillane said. To join the program, each of the 28 members had to attend an eight-week training program taught by emergency responders. The first class graduated in March.

“We have received extensive training in all aspects of first aid and disaster planning,” Geraci said. “This has included search and rescue.”

CERT has helped the Cranbury police with road closings, including emergency flooding and traffic, and volunteered at community events. Dillane said CERT was also a “great support” .

“CERT is really like an extension of us,” Dillane said.
