Blaze Destroys Part of East Windsor Office Building

The fire appears to have started in mulch next to the building, according to a fire official.

A portion of an East Windsor office building was destroyed after a mulch fire spread late Saturday afternoon, according to a fire official.

The fire appeared to have started from something smoldering the mulch next to the building, located at 339 Princeton Hightstown Road, which spread to the side, up the walls and into the attic, said East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company #1 Chief Kevin Brink.

Around 5:30 p.m. East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company #1 Deputy Chief Jim McCann was driving by when he noticed smoke coming from the building, and found the back was on fire, Brink said.

When crews arrived they initially had to use water from the four fire trucks arriving on scene since the nearest hydrant was over 1000 feet from the building. Takers were also brought in supply additional water while hoses were being run to the hydrants, Brink said. The fire was under control by 6:30 p.m.

The fire was contained to one portion of the building, and there was heat and smoke damage throughout, Brink said.
