Fairfield Road Fire Displaces Family of 6

The fire was out in 30 minutes, with no injuries reported.

A one-alarm blaze in the Twin Rivers neighborhood of East Windsor this morning drew five fire companies and displaced a family of six, according to Chief Barry Rashkin. No injuries were reported.

A treadmill caught fire while a woman was working out on it in the basement of a two-story townhouse at 488 Fairfield Court, Chief Rashkin said, with the call reaching his company at 10:37 a.m. today, Tuesday. The fire spread through the basement and up to the first floor, he continued, but "crews got in there and they made a really good stop on it and actually held it to the basement area. There was a little smoke up in the attic, but most of it was down in the basement area.

"Everybody did their  job, and we held it to one house, and that's a job right there," he added. "With townhouses so close together, it can get away."

The townhouse at 488, which sits between two others, suffered fire, smoke and some water damage along with a broken window, Chief Rashkin said. The residences on either side suffered from minor smoke damage and one of their windows had to be broken as well. "We try not to break them, but sometimes we've got no choice," he explained.

The center residence was home to four adults and two children, who were home, and Chief Rashkin said the Red Cross has found housing for them. The fire was out in about half an hour and that townhouse is now uninhabitable but reparable, he added.
