Hightstown Police Officer Set to Retire

The department is searching for an officer to fill the upcoming vacant position.

An 18-year member of the will retire this year and a search has started for his replacement, according to the police director. 

Patrolman David Chenoweth plans to retire in November or December of this year, said Director James Le Tellier.

Prior to joining Hightstown police in 1994, Chenoweth worked as an officer for the Allentown Police Department, serving for a total of 25 years, Le Tellier said. He has been involved in many community policing efforts, including National Night Out.

Le Tellier said five officers, including Chenoweth, are eligible to retire in the next two years. 

The department is accepting applications to fill the patrolman position before the end of the year to train the new officer before Chenoweth's departure, Le Tellier said.

Applications are due July 27. The department requests no phone calls to apply for the position and states they are an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Applicants must hold current New Jersey Police Training certification from an accredited police academy, meet all qualifications of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-118 et. seq and have a valid state drivers license.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

(a) a four (4) year college degree; or, (b) at least two (2) years active military service with honorable discharge or two (2) years prior law enforcement experience plus either a two (2) year college degree or sixty (60) credits; or (c) at least four (4) years active military service with an honorable discharge; or (d) candidates fluent in both English and Spanish; or, (e) experienced officers who are currently employed or who have been recently laid off in good standing
