Hightstown Woman Dies in Deerfield Apartment Fire

The woman has been identified as Marin Edich Patino Zurita.

A Hightstown woman died on Monday when a fire broke out inside of her Deerfield Apartment.

The woman who died in the fire has been identified as Marin Edich Patino Zurita, 50, Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Public Information Officer Casey DeBlasio announced Friday. Autopsy results concluded that Zurita’s death was accidental as she died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, DeBlasio said.

Hightstown police were dispatched to the fire at around 6 a.m. Monday morning where they found the fire blazing from apartment 7 within building 9 of the Deerfield Apartments complex. Zurita was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where she died soon after.

The fire has been ruled accidental as it appears that it was caused by improper use of extension cords, police said.
