The driver and passenger had minor injuries, police said.

An 81-year-old man was charged with careless driving after the car he was driving careened through a shopping center parking lot, struck a parked car and three parking islands before crashing into Sunday, according to police.

Police said Monday the driver, Herman Handelman, was in front of ShopRite just before 10 a.m. when he intended to stop the car, but instead hit the accelerator.

Handelman, and passenger Dolores Handelman, 81, both of Monroe, were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton with minor injuries. Police did not disclose the relationship between the two.
