Taxi Search Yields 847 Decks of Heroin, Hightstown Police Say

Lashaun Turner faces multiple drug possession charges.

A traffic stop of a taxi in Hightstown led to drug possession charges for one of the passengers.

On Thursday shortly after midnight, officers stopped the taxi for several motor vehicle violations. As police approached the vehicle, they detected a strong odor of marijuana from inside the car, which was occupied by the driver and a male and female fare.

The officers received consent to search the vehicle. During the search, police said they recovered 847 decks of heroin and a small amount crack cocaine near
where the male passenger was seated.

The male passenger, Lashaun Turner, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of drug possession. He was remanded to Mercer County Adult Correctional Facility and held on $100,000 bail.

The driver of the taxi received tickets for in motor vehicle violations and released, and the female passenger was released with no charges.

How old is Lashaun Turner? Where is he from? The officers detected a strong odor of marijuana. But none was found. Did they just smoke it all? Was the driver smoking with them? Does the driver know the passenger? Was the driver bringing the passenger around to pick up the decks of heroin? Or to drop off, or sell, some, or all of the decks of heroin? Was the driver ever properly questioned as to his involvement, if any?

I have seen a spike in overdoses, withdrawals and we read about the busts. The drug has a well documented increase in use up and down the NJ coastal towns, Trenton and now quite prevalent locally with this recent bust. Not a lot you can do except awareness in the schools and increased police action.

With this story, and many other, I think a little more covering of the facts would be great. Also a follow up on stories to see what the out come is would also be a good thing. But I am at least glad to see this Patch actually cover or local community

Heroin is an epidemic in this town...so are taxis. This story correlates the two. Coincidence? Not likely!!
