Afternoon Turnpike Crash Snarls Traffic

One person was transported to the hospital with a head injury, police said.

A lane was temporarily blocked on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound, north of Exit 8A, after a crash leaving one person seriously injured, according to state police.

Police said it is not known how many cars were involved, and one person was transported to the hospital with a head injury. One other person had minor injuries. 

A five-mile backup remained in the southbound lanes around 2:10 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

The scene was being cleared around 1:20 p.m. and all lanes had reopened, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
