Barrier Island Closed to Vehicles Dec. 8 to 18 for Natural Gas System Repairs

Utility announced the next step in service restoration on Monday

Toms River's section of barrier island is expected to be closed to traffic from Dec. 8 to 18 as New Jersey Natural Gas crews make "critical" repairs to their system that will lead to service restoration for some by the end of the month.

Crews are prepared to re-activate gas service on the island but must follow a protocol to charge the lines before any sources of ignition -- vehicles included -- can enter the area, according to a statement on the Toms River Township website.

Once gas lines in the area are re-actived, another team will begin installing meters. When meters are installed and electricity has been restored, a qualified technician who has determined the gas equipment is safe may restore service to the property, according to NJNG.

Natural gas service is expected to be restored by the end of December to "all of our customers whose homes have not sustained such major damage that we cannot safely restore their service," a spokesperson for the utility said.

Customers who smell gas are advised to leave the building, refrain from using matches, cell phones or electrical switches and are asked to call 1-800-GAS-LEAK.

Sorry David, we do have to accept it because thats what is dictated to us. But just because some of us are adults we don't have roll over and agree with it, LIKE YOU. It's people who fight for what they believe is why things get done. While you sit back and say they told me I can't go because its not safe. That's why we might not get back in until spring.

Hurricane Sandy, I accept it not only because I was told but because I have been to the island three times and have seen the devastation and destruction with my own eyes. Might I add, I've never seen anything like it. Maybe you haven't been exposed to the idiotic amount of comments that I'm tired of hearing by now. Please don't tell me you were one of the several hundreds who proposed storming the bridge past the National Guard? Whose brilliant idea was that, as if it would ever happen!

Hurricane Sandy, if you went further with your education you might know the difference between "lose" and "loose" and the proper way to use these very different words. Also, being more educated, you might understand the bigger picture of why things are being done the way they are and the importance of having the island ready for Memorial Day and how the Jersey Shore contributes to the 30 billion dollar tourism industry in New Jersey! This issue and problem is much bigger than you and me.

David, I guess I have you beat in more ways than one. We have owned a home in Ortley for over 40 years. Both full time and part, at times. Full time at the time of the storm. And I too have been there, 5 times and have seen with MY OWN EYES. And I will agree that the devastation and destruction that I see is mind boggling and unrecognizable. But I might add, I've seen worst. I've seen Katrina, Hugo and a few other, with the Red Cross. In Ortley, though home were destroyed, gone and the remaining one are devastated, the streets are fine. YES, they are piled up with all of our homes first floor interiors. That is NO REASON to keep us out and from working on OUR HOMES. I have NO PROBLEM with being out a day or two while the gas company works. BUT NOT 10 DAYS. And I would be more than happy to gather with others for a protest/rally for the unjust going on. (and it wasn't storm the bridge, it was a rally from what I read) But you can sit back and wait. And if your tired of the idiotic comments from frustrated people whos rights are being walked all over, stop reading. Because you are far from perfect my friend!!!

Hurricane Sandy... Yes, you have me beat in so many ways as if this was some type of competition. I was going to tell you how I hit 2 home runs in a single baseball game when I played in Little League, but I'm sure you hit 3 home runs in one game during that same year! Thank you for your last post, you've definitely shown your mentality level for all to read.
