Certified Petition Halts Borough Hall Reconstruction

A petition for a public referendum on the Hightstown bond ordinance funding the Borough Hall reconstruction has been certified.

The petition for a public referendum on the Hightstown bond ordinance which partially funds the rebuilding of Hightstown Borough Hall has been certified, according to Borough Clerk Debra Sopronyi.

Sopronyi had ten days to verify that at least 160 of the 355 signatures on the petition against the bond ordinance were certified to vote after the petition was filed with the Borough on April 24.

Now that the petition has been certified, the bond ordinance funds are not available. .

The construction of the new Borough Hall, which has been uninhabited since being flooded by Hurricane Irene in August 2011, has now been halted as the money to fund the bids on the project are no longer available.

The Council now has three options: to put a referendum on the November ballot, hold a special election for the referendum, or to rescind the ordinance. The options were discussed at the Borough Council’s Monday night meeting, but no decision was made.
