East Windsor Kicks Off Bike Safety Month With Helmet Giveaway

Free helmets will be given to residents ages five to 16 on May 8, May 15 and May 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building.

East Windsor Township is kicking off May as Bicycle Safety Month with a “Use Your Head” helmet giveaway on Tuesday.

“I believe it is a worthy goal of our Township to launch a full public program to focus on and improve the safe use of bicycles within the Township by undertaking a pro-active education and outreach campaign,” Mayor Janice Mironov said in a news release. There will also be helmet giveaways on May 15 and May 22.

To receive a free helmet, you must be an East Windsor resident between the ages five to 16, and watch a five-minute video on helmet and bike safety. Participants will then be fitted for their free helmet, the release said. The programs will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the .

“This bicycle safety program, entitled ‘Use Your Head’ and geared to children under 17 years old, is intended to enhance safety by increasing awareness of the laws requiring helmet wear, promoting helmet usage and instructing on correct helmet usage and fit,” Mironov said.

The three-phase bicycle safety initiative is funded through a $10,000 grant from the New Jersey Highway Traffic Safety Division, the release said.

From June 1 to July 31 the second phase launch with East Windsor police officers giving out form summonses to children, recognizing them for wearing a helmet. They will be asked to sign a pledge on helmet safety and will be entered in a drawing to win prizes at National Night Out - to be held on Aug. 7.

The third phase, “Bike at Night, Use a Light,” will educate bikers on using a light at night, the release said. White and red bike lights, and information on the bike light law, will be given out at the police building from Aug. 1 to Sept. 1.

“Those who bicycle at night without proper lights are a danger not only to themselves, but to motorists using the roadways,” Mironov said.
