“Safety is the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s top priority, and these grants support safety through local enforcement and capital improvement projects,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said in a news release. “The funding helps local governments achieve their objectives without burdening local property taxpayers.”

Money from the Local Aid Bikeway program goes toward the construction of bike paths and lanes, which promotes exercise, an environmental-friendly alternative mode of transportation and bike safety, according to the NJDOT.

The Safe Corridor grant program began in 2003 targeting 14 ten-mile sections of highway with a history of high crash rates. Funding comes in part from fines that are doubled along the designated Safe Corridors, and is allocated based on crash data, with more funding going to areas with the greatest need for continued enhanced enforcement measures, according to the NJDOT.
