Hightstown Settles Discrimination Lawsuit

The Borough settled with a former Deputy Municipal Clerk for $4,000.

The Borough of Hightstown settled a discrimination lawsuit that was brought by a former Deputy Municipal Clerk in February 2010.

The settlement calls for the Borough to pay $4,000 to Leona Baylor, according to a resolution passed at Monday’s council meeting.

According to the complaint, Baylor said she was fired because of her race and not budget constraints, which was the reason she was given.

Monday’s resolution said “the settlement does not constitute an admission of any liability” by the Borough.

“The Borough determined that it was in their best interest to put an end to this and this will formally end any matters that Ms. Baylor had brought against the Borough with regard to her former employment,” Raffetto said Monday.

Borough Attorney Frederick Raffetto said the Borough would pay 20 percent of the $4,000, with insurance covering the remainder.

The Borough’s insurance company appointed Marc D. Mory of Dvorak & Associates to represent the Borough, and he did not return calls for comment.

Raffetto said the settlement ends all litigation with Baylor.
