PBA President Calls for Trenton Mayor's Resignation

The PBA President cites elevating crime in the city and the mayor's federal indictment as his reasons.

The head of the New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association is calling for the resignation of Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, nj.com reports.

PBA President Anthony F. Wieners cited near record breaking levels of crime and the mayor’s federal indictment as reasons the mayor should step down, according to the report.

Mack has asked Gov. Chris Christie for $46.4 million to hire 75 police officers, which he wants the state to pay for four years to combat violent crime. Trenton is approaching the record for homicides in a single year in the city, which is 31. The city laid off 100 police officers in 2011.

In December, Mack was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of extortion, bribery, mail fraud and wire fraud, according to nbcnewyork.com.

Mack’s administration has also been accused of nepotism and reckless spending.

Since his indictment, Mack has remained in his position as mayor, even holding what appeared to be a fundraiser in June.

Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. President Steve Sweeney have already called for Mack's resignation.

Mack's current term expires on Dec. 31, 2014.
