Report: Hightstown Mayor Seeks $150K Settlement from Borough

The purpose of the settlement is to avoid a battle in court that could potentially cost the Borough much more in legal fees.

Hightstown Mayor Steve Kirson is currently trying to obtain an $150,000 settlement from the Hightstown Borough in order to evade court for his defamation claim against Police Director James LeTellier, according to the Windsor Hights Herald. Kirson filed a tort claim against LeTellier in June citing a damaged reputation. Kirson also filed against Councilman Robert Thibault and the Hightstown Borough.

According to the report, Kirson’s lawyers wrote a letter to the Borough Council in September stating that it is in the Borough’s best interest to settle before a legal claim is filed, at which point the Borough would be forced to pay the costs of defending the suit.

The initial tort claim notice focused on allegations LeTellier made that Kirson threatened his position as police director. This occurred after LeTellier verbalized his opposition to the mayor’s idea of moving borough operations to the Lucas facility on Mercer Street.
