Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center Offers Events For Educators, Open to Public

West Windsor, NJ:  Mercer County Community College's Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center will host an upcoming event that is open to the public, “War Horse” on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. on the West Windsor Campus.

On Wednesday, April 4, a discussion entitled, “War Horse: How One Novel (or play, or movie) Can Teach Peace” will be held at the Resource Center.  The discussion stems from the 2011 English war epic motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg, which was based on a children's novel by British author Michael Morpurgo.  Both the novel and film detail the remarkable bond between a man named Albert and his loyal horse, Joey.  The story follows Joey on an incredible journey across the English countryside after the pair are forcibly separated during World War I.

“War Horse” is a simple story that brings many conflicting ideas to the table, including love and hate, war and peace, tolerance, and the importance of communicating life values.  A discussion of this story and how it can be adapted to classroom lessons will be led by Elizabeth DeGiorgio, MCCC education professor and Holocaust Center co-director, along with Lisa O’Neill, Mercer County guidance counselor and advisory commission member for the Center.  Two professional development hours are available for educators who attend.
